TRUE OR FALSE: I only eat food for fuel.
Most of us will say FALSE.
Which by the way is totally valid.
Most of us eat for other reasons besides just fuel for our bodies.
Most of us eat emotionally.
Positive emotions can lead us to eat - like excited, happy, celebratory.
Negative emotions can lead us to eat - like stress, boredom, sadness.
My clients always want to know how to solve this problem.
One answer is to, well, actually just feel the feelings.
But, how?
Let’s start with the negative ones.
So many of us eat when we feel negative emotions as a way to comfort ourselves.
So many of us eat so we don’t even have to feel the negative emotion in the first place.
But here is the thing.
Negative emotions aren’t bad.
Do you know what a negative emotion is?
It is just a vibration in the body, that is it.
What if you welcomed it? Invited it in?
There is a common practice in yoga and meditation: “INHALE (insert positive feeling ie ‘joy’) and EXHALE (insert negative feeling ie ‘stress’)”.
Totally well-intentioned.
But it suggests that our negative feelings are wrong, or bad. Something to be fixed, to get away from.
So what I want you to practice is the opposite: “INHALE (insert negative feeling ie ‘stress’) and EXHALE (insert negative feeling ie ‘joy’)”.
Try it.
Our badassery is born the moment we decide our negative emotions are not something to be fixed.
They are something to be invited in.
The more you feel, the less you eat for emotional reasons, the more likely you are to live and be at your dream weight forever.
